Depending how much you use the computer, depends on how often you need to get the cooling system serviced, but is essential to good computer management, as is defragmenting, this also applies to laptops, as the fans all run at a constant level, varied only by the heat sensing components, if you have computer with a core two dual core etc, it is likely there are two fan sockets a four pin fan 1, and a three pin fan 1, the four pin type is a PWM type, control being the BIOS system, in practise, this would seem a good idea, but my experience was a strange noise effect that could for some reason, not actually be detected, as being outside the human hearing parameter’s, but very uncomfortable while active, during my need to service the cooling, at which point so much dust clogged the cooling fins on the heat sink unit, requiring the whole thing to be dismantled, to do a full as new cleanup job, then replacing same, discovered the noise, while subdued, returned after about an hours use, I then concluded, a new cooling unit might be the only way forward, strangely, I was unable to source the 4pin PWM type, so bought the 3.6Ghz compliant 755 chip set 3pin Fan1 type, same fit, but with a base plate, easily installed, also replacing the two case fans [80x80mm] a full replacement job in fact, upon switch on, the previous strange noise had disappeared,, along with the notable fan bearing noises, the result being a very quiet system,
Conclusion, if the cooling is noisy, just replace it, most cooling system are easily replaced, you just need to know the chip set type, and fitting arrangement type, but most can be easy to source and fit, but don’t attempt this without also obtaining some heat transfer compound, [paste] this is essential when fitting either re-con job or new cooling units, failure to observe this important point can and probably will destroy the CPU chip, other than this the job is not complicated, but if you have doubts , go to your local expert to have it done, in the event insist a new unit be fitted, and the old one returned after the upgrade, so you are sure he did what you ask, then look inside, to see a new cooler in place, fairly easy to spot if its not, fan blades will always appear shiny and dust free, cleaned fans don’t come up like new, just so you know, a new cooling unit on average is around £10 for most application jobs, so why bother cleaning a unit were the bearings are obviously in question,
Modern day thinking, would suggest to save space, the laptop is the ideal device, now able to boast big hard drives big RAMs etc, but like your PC, uses the same mechanics, to cool the CPU, but on a much smaller scale, but never the less, still sucks all the dust from the air into its cooler unit, so will clog up in the same way, so will eventually be unable to cool adequately, for the same reasons as the PC, but in the case of a laptop, getting the cooling system out either for cleaning, or renewal, is very much more complex, while I also use the laptop, its use is confined to much less work, and is useful for times when power isn’t available for some reason, one is able to carry on while the PC may be out of service for what ever reason, so the PC has its place in the home for constant use, being more amenable to the occasional clean job, one does need to be aware of the work you do on a computer device, to calculate the maintenance involved, bit like cars really, at some stage, it needs to be done, to avoid expensive failure eventually, I have avoided pictures here, but may include some later, only as examples, but there are so many system types, may be unhelpful, as individual cases will always be fairly unique, so actually instruction isn’t intended here, only to make us aware of the need to know what will eventually happen in your computer, these cooler fans may boast many thousands of hours before some thing goes wrong, [ in practice though very unlikely] like bearings failure, shrieking of fans is common, after say an hour or so, indicating a time to service the system, this page is intended only to raise awareness, if you own one, [ car or computer] service is required from time to time, or failure will follow, with the obvious consequences and cost.
